Zima (drink)
Zima was a clear, citrus-flavored alcoholic beverage produced and marketed by the Coors Brewing Company (now Molson Coors Beverage Company) between 1993 and 2008 in the United States. It was also available in the United Kingdom and Canada for limited periods. Marketed as an alternative to beer, Zima belonged to the category of "malternative" beverages.
Zima was brewed using a process similar to that of beer, but the resulting liquid was then filtered to remove color and much of the malt flavor. The base was then combined with citrus flavoring and carbonated. The goal was to create a refreshing and easy-to-drink beverage that would appeal to consumers who did not traditionally enjoy beer.
Despite a significant marketing push, Zima's popularity declined over time. While initially successful, it struggled to maintain its appeal and eventually became associated with the "clear craze" of the 1990s, which faded as consumer preferences shifted. Its perceived lack of a distinct identity and criticisms regarding its taste contributed to its eventual discontinuation in the United States in 2008. Molson Coors briefly revived Zima for a limited release in the summer of 2017.
