Kingston (horse)

Kingston (1884 – 1912) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse, foaled at Rancocas Stable in Jobstown, New Jersey. He was owned and trained by James Rowe, Sr.

A dark brown horse, Kingston was known for his incredible stamina and consistency. He started in 138 races, winning 89, placing in 33, and showing in 7. This high number of starts is remarkable considering the training regimens of modern racehorses. He was a contemporary of other notable horses such as Salvator and Tenny.

Kingston was primarily known for his prowess in handicap races, often carrying significant weight and still managing to win. His victories included multiple editions of the Suburban Handicap (1887, 1888, 1889), the Monmouth Cup (1887, 1889), the Brighton Cup (1888, 1890), and the Coney Island Cup (1889). He also won the Withers Stakes in 1887.

Kingston’s enduring legacy lies in his remarkable record of victories and his embodiment of the hard-knocking, durable racehorse. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1955.
