XMetaL

XMetaL is a commercial XML editor developed by JustSystems. It is designed to allow users to create, edit, and manage structured content using XML, SGML, and other markup languages. XMetaL provides a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editing environment, allowing users to view and manipulate XML content in a visual representation that closely resembles the final output format.

XMetaL supports various XML standards and schemas, including DITA, DocBook, and custom schema definitions. It offers features such as validation against schemas, content reuse, conditional text, and version control integration. The editor is often used in technical documentation, publishing, and other content-intensive industries.

Historically, XMetaL was originally developed by SoftQuad Software. Corel acquired SoftQuad in 1998, and subsequently sold XMetaL to Blast Radius. In 2006, Blast Radius was acquired by WPP Group. In 2013, XMetaL was acquired by JustSystems. The ownership changes have influenced its development and market positioning over time.

XMetaL is available as a desktop application and, in some versions, as a web-based editor. It is often used in conjunction with content management systems (CMS) to streamline the content creation and publishing process.
