Zakspeed 881
The Zakspeed 881 was a Formula One car built and raced by the German Zakspeed team during the 1988 Formula One season. It was designed by Gustav Brunner and powered by Zakspeed's own four-cylinder turbocharged engine, the Zakspeed 1500/1.
The 881 represented a significant step forward for Zakspeed, who had struggled in previous seasons with unreliable and underpowered engines. The car featured a more aerodynamic design compared to its predecessors, and the engine, while still less powerful than the V6 turbo engines of Honda and Ferrari, was more reliable and provided better driveability.
Drivers Bernd Schneider and Piercarlo Ghinzani drove the 881 during the 1988 season. The car's best result was 5th place, achieved by Schneider at the 1988 German Grand Prix. This result demonstrated the potential of the Zakspeed 881 and marked a highlight in Zakspeed's Formula One history. However, overall reliability remained an issue throughout the season, preventing the team from consistently challenging for points.
Despite its moments of promise, the Zakspeed 881 ultimately proved to be the team's last Formula One car before they withdrew from the sport at the end of the 1989 season.
