Mark Gross (mathematician)
Mark Gross is an American mathematician specializing in algebraic geometry, particularly mirror symmetry, toric geometry, and the construction of moduli spaces. He is known for his contributions to the development of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) conjecture and its relation to log geometry.
Gross received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1990, under the supervision of Robin Hartshorne. He has held positions at Cornell University and the University of Warwick, where he is currently a Professor of Mathematics.
His research focuses on the geometric aspects of string theory and the broader field of algebraic geometry. He has developed innovative techniques using tropical geometry and log geometry to study degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds and other algebraic varieties, providing a deeper understanding of mirror symmetry and its applications.
Significant publications include works on toric fibrations, deformation theory, and the construction of moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau manifolds. He has co-authored several books and research papers that have significantly influenced the field. His work is characterized by its rigorous mathematical approach and its close connections to theoretical physics.
