Special Patrol Group (RUC)

The Special Patrol Group (SPG) was a specialist unit of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC), the police force in Northern Ireland from 1922 to 2001. Established in 1970, its primary role was to provide a mobile, centrally controlled reserve of officers to deal with public order situations, particularly during the height of the Troubles.

The SPG was frequently deployed to areas experiencing civil unrest, riots, and sectarian violence. Its members were trained in riot control tactics, firearms, and other specialist policing skills. They were equipped with vehicles and equipment specifically designed for dealing with large-scale disturbances.

The unit's actions were often controversial, and they were involved in a number of incidents that resulted in civilian deaths and injuries. Criticisms included allegations of excessive force, sectarian bias, and a lack of accountability. The SPG was subject to scrutiny and investigation throughout its existence.

Following the Patten Report, which reviewed policing in Northern Ireland, the RUC was replaced by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in 2001. The SPG was disbanded as part of the reforms and its functions were largely absorbed into other specialist units within the PSNI. The PSNI implemented new training, procedures, and oversight mechanisms designed to address the concerns raised about the SPG’s operations.
