UTV (TV channel)
UTV, formerly known as Ulster Television, is a commercial television station serving Northern Ireland. It holds the ITV franchise for the region.
History: UTV launched on October 31, 1959, making it one of the original ITV stations. For many years, it was known for its strong local programming alongside network output from ITV.
Programming: UTV broadcasts a mix of national ITV programming and locally produced content. Its local programming includes news, current affairs, and lifestyle shows tailored to Northern Ireland. Significant past productions included the long-running soap opera Coronation Street, which UTV initially rejected but later became a staple.
Ownership: Over the years, UTV has undergone several changes in ownership. In 2016, ITV plc acquired UTV Media's television assets, including UTV, bringing the channel under the same ownership as the rest of the ITV network. The UTV brand was retained after the acquisition.
Branding: Throughout its history, UTV has used various on-screen identities. Since becoming part of ITV plc, the channel has largely adopted the ITV branding, although it often retains some distinctive Northern Ireland-focused elements.
News: UTV provides regional news coverage through UTV Live, which broadcasts regular bulletins throughout the day. The news service focuses on stories relevant to Northern Ireland.
Availability: UTV is available on terrestrial television, cable, satellite, and online platforms within Northern Ireland. Its programming is also available on the ITV Hub streaming service.
