Kei car

A Kei car (Japanese: 軽自動車, kei jidōsha, lit. "light automobile"), also known as a K-car, is a Japanese vehicle category for the smallest and most restricted type of highway-legal car. The regulations originated after World War II to promote affordable transportation for the Japanese population.

Kei cars are defined by their maximum dimensions, engine size, and power output. These regulations have been revised several times over the years, generally allowing for slightly larger vehicles and more powerful engines. Current regulations (as of 2024) generally stipulate a maximum length of 3.4 meters, a maximum width of 1.48 meters, a maximum height of 2.0 meters, and a maximum engine displacement of 660 cc with a maximum power output of 64 horsepower.

Kei cars benefit from several tax and insurance advantages in Japan, making them a popular choice for city driving and cost-conscious consumers. They are often purchased by those who value fuel efficiency and ease of parking in congested urban areas.

Despite their small size, modern Kei cars often incorporate advanced safety features and technology. While Kei cars are primarily sold and used in Japan, some models have been exported to other markets, although their reception has varied depending on local regulations and consumer preferences.

The Kei car category includes a wide range of body styles, including hatchbacks, sedans, vans, and trucks.
