Jack Katz (artist)

Jack Katz (August 28, 1927 – September 12, 2008) was an American comic book artist and writer best known for his epic comic book series The First Kingdom, a science fiction and fantasy work published independently beginning in 1974.

Katz began his career in the late 1940s working for various comic book publishers, including Timely Comics (later Marvel Comics), DC Comics, and Charlton Comics. He contributed to a wide range of genres, including horror, war, romance, and science fiction. Notable works from this early period include contributions to titles like Captain America, Tales of Suspense, House of Secrets, and Weird Science.

In the 1970s, Katz embarked on his most ambitious project, The First Kingdom. This creator-owned series, exploring themes of mythology, philosophy, and social commentary, took him decades to complete. The First Kingdom is characterized by its complex narrative, philosophical depth, and distinctive artistic style, often using detailed pen and ink work with a strong emphasis on anatomy and dynamic figures.

Beyond The First Kingdom, Katz also taught comic book art and storytelling. His influence extends to other artists and writers in the industry. He also wrote and self-published several instructional books on comic art techniques. He is considered by some to be an important figure in the history of independent comic book publishing.
