Jassy (film)
Jassy is a 1947 British period drama film directed by Bernard Knowles and starring Margaret Lockwood, Patricia Roc, and Dennis Price. The film is based on the 1944 novel Jassy by Norah Lofts.
The story is set in 18th-century England and follows the life of Jassy Woodroffe (Lockwood), an orphaned young woman with a reputation for having supernatural powers. She falls in love with a member of the gentry, but her supposed "gift" brings her both admirers and enemies, ultimately leading to betrayal and tragedy.
The film is notable for its Technicolor cinematography, lavish costumes, and melodramatic plot. It was a significant box office success in Britain and helped solidify Margaret Lockwood's status as a popular star. While not critically acclaimed, it is considered a classic example of British historical melodrama of the period. Key themes explored in the film include class differences, superstition, female ambition, and the dangers of societal prejudice.
