Bovichtus

Bovichtus is a genus of small, demersal fish belonging to the family Bovichtidae, commonly known as thornfishes or thumbfishes. These fishes are native to the cold waters of the Southern Hemisphere, primarily found around New Zealand and southern South America.

Bovichtus species are characterized by their small size, typically reaching lengths of less than 15 centimeters. They possess a flattened body shape, a relatively large head, and small, ctenoid scales. Their coloration is generally cryptic, often mottled with shades of brown and grey to blend in with the rocky or algal-covered environments they inhabit. A distinctive feature is the presence of small spines or thorns on the head and operculum (gill cover), giving rise to the common name "thornfish."

These fish are typically found in shallow coastal waters, often amongst rocks, seaweed, and in tide pools. They are benthic feeders, consuming small invertebrates such as crustaceans, mollusks, and worms.

The taxonomy of Bovichtus has been subject to revision over time. As of current knowledge, recognised species within the genus include, but may not be limited to, Bovichtus argentinus, Bovichtus diacanthus, and Bovichtus variegatus. Further research and genetic analysis may clarify species boundaries and phylogenetic relationships within the genus.

Bovichtus species are not typically targeted by commercial fisheries due to their small size and low abundance. They play a role in the benthic food web as both predators and prey for larger organisms.
