Caucasus Army (Armed Forces of South Russia)
The Caucasus Army was a White Army military formation that existed during the Russian Civil War. It was part of the Armed Forces of South Russia (AFSR), under the overall command of General Anton Denikin. It operated primarily in the North Caucasus region, fighting against Bolshevik forces and various local national groups.
The Caucasus Army's composition varied throughout its existence, but typically included infantry divisions, cavalry divisions, and Cossack units. It was involved in fierce battles for control of key cities and territories in the region, including Ekaterinodar (Krasnodar) and Stavropol.
The army aimed to secure White control over the North Caucasus, exploit its resources (particularly oil), and eventually link up with other White forces to advance on Moscow. Its operations were often hampered by logistical difficulties, internal divisions, and the resistance of local populations.
Notable commanders of the Caucasus Army included General Pyotr Wrangel and General Andrei Shkuro.
The Caucasus Army ultimately failed to achieve its objectives. Bolshevik forces gradually gained the upper hand, pushing the White forces southward. The army was eventually defeated and its remnants were either evacuated from the region or dispersed. The collapse of the Caucasus Army significantly contributed to the overall defeat of the White movement in South Russia.
