Tiberianus (poet)

Tiberianus was a Latin poet of late antiquity, generally believed to have flourished in the 4th century CE. Little is known of his life beyond what can be inferred from his extant poetry. He is primarily known for a small collection of elegies, most notably a poem addressed to the emperor, likely Constantine I or Constantius II, and another describing the joys of retirement in the countryside.

His style is marked by its use of classical allusions and refined language, echoing the traditions of earlier Roman elegists like Tibullus and Propertius. While not considered a major figure in Latin literature, his poems offer valuable insights into the cultural and intellectual climate of the later Roman Empire, particularly regarding themes of nature, leisure, and imperial power. The surviving poems attributed to Tiberianus are relatively short but display a high level of technical skill and sensitivity to the nuances of the Latin language. His work continues to be studied for its literary merit and its contribution to our understanding of late Roman poetry.
