Skotina
Skotina is a village located in the Pieria regional unit of Central Macedonia, Greece. It is situated on the slopes of Mount Olympus, near the coast of the Thermaic Gulf. Skotina is divided into two distinct settlements: Ano (Upper) Skotina and Kato (Lower) Skotina.
Ano Skotina is the older, traditional village located higher up on the mountain. It features characteristic Macedonian architecture, with stone houses and narrow streets. Kato Skotina is the newer settlement, located closer to the sea, and has a more modern appearance.
The village's economy is primarily based on agriculture, including the cultivation of olives, fruits, and vegetables. Tourism also plays a significant role, particularly in Kato Skotina, due to its proximity to the coast and beaches.
Skotina offers hiking opportunities on Mount Olympus, and its location provides access to other nearby attractions, such as Platamonas Castle and the archaeological site of Dion. The area is known for its natural beauty and views of the Aegean Sea.
Historically, the area has been inhabited since ancient times. The name "Skotina" is thought to have originated from the ancient Greek word "skotos," meaning darkness or shadows, possibly referring to the shaded location of the village on the mountain slopes.
