Signoret, Simone (1921-1985)

Simone Signoret was a French actress who achieved international recognition for her powerful and nuanced performances in film and theatre. Born Simone Henriette Charlotte Kaminker in Wiesbaden, Germany, to a French mother and a Polish-Jewish father, she adopted the surname Signoret to protect her family during the Nazi occupation of France.

Signoret began her acting career in the 1940s, initially taking on small roles. She quickly rose to prominence, becoming a leading figure in French cinema. Her breakthrough role came in Jacques Becker's Casque d'Or (1952), where she portrayed a captivating courtesan. This performance established her as a major star.

She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Alice Aisgill in Room at the Top (1959), a British drama. This made her the first French actress to win an Oscar for a leading role. She also received the BAFTA Award and the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for the same role.

Signoret continued to work in both French and English-language films throughout her career. Notable films include Les Diaboliques (1955), Army of Shadows (1969), and Madame Rosa (1977), for which she won the César Award for Best Actress.

Beyond her acting, Signoret was known for her outspoken political views and her support for various social causes. She was a strong advocate for human rights and was involved in anti-war movements.

Signoret was married to film director Yves Allégret from 1948 to 1951, and later to actor and singer Yves Montand from 1951 until her death in 1985. She wrote an autobiography, Nostalgia Isn't What It Used To Be, published in 1978.
