Sarah Williams (Labyrinth)
Sarah Williams is the protagonist of the 1986 fantasy film Labyrinth, directed by Jim Henson. She is a teenage girl portrayed by Jennifer Connelly.
Sarah is depicted as a typical teenager on the cusp of adulthood, frustrated by her responsibilities and yearning for adventure and excitement. She lives with her father, stepmother, and baby stepbrother, Toby. Often feeling neglected and misunderstood, Sarah escapes into fantasy worlds through her love of theater and fairy tales, particularly a book titled The Labyrinth.
Driven by resentment and immaturity, Sarah impulsively wishes Toby away to the Goblin King, Jareth, played by David Bowie. Immediately regretting her decision, Sarah is then given twelve hours to navigate the Labyrinth and rescue Toby before he is turned into a goblin forever.
Throughout her journey through the Labyrinth, Sarah faces numerous challenges and encounters a variety of fantastical creatures, both helpful and treacherous. She learns important lessons about responsibility, the value of true friendship, and the power of her own imagination. Sarah's character arc involves her maturing and recognizing the importance of her family, ultimately rejecting Jareth's tempting offer to rule beside him and choosing to return home with Toby, wiser and more self-assured. Her famous line, "You have no power over me," signifies her triumph over Jareth and her reclamation of her own agency.
