Gendarmery (Serbia)
The Serbian Gendarmery (Serbian: Жандармерија, Žandarmerija) is a unified, specialized unit of the Police of Serbia, with national jurisdiction, performing complex security tasks. It is distinct from regular police forces and is trained and equipped to handle high-risk situations, maintain public order in extraordinary circumstances, and combat terrorism.
The Gendarmery's roles include:
- Counter-terrorism operations
- High-risk arrest warrants and operations
- Maintenance of public order during riots, demonstrations, and other large-scale disturbances
- Security of high-profile individuals and facilities
- Search and rescue operations, particularly in difficult terrain

The Serbian Gendarmery has undergone several reorganizations and reforms throughout its history, most recently after the dissolution of Serbia and Montenegro.
