HMS Bristol (1711)

HMS Bristol was a 50-gun fourth-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched in 1711. She was built according to the 1706 Establishment at Deptford Dockyard.

Her early career involved patrolling the English Channel and escorting merchant convoys. In 1726, she was part of a squadron sent to the West Indies to deter Spanish aggression.

Bristol underwent a rebuilding at Woolwich Dockyard in 1732, relaunched as a similar 50-gun fourth-rate. During the War of Jenkins' Ear, she saw action in the Caribbean, participating in several engagements against Spanish shipping.

The ship continued in service through the War of the Austrian Succession, where she was employed on convoy duty and patrolling the Atlantic.

In 1746, Bristol was taken to pieces. Fourth-rate ships of this size were becoming less effective as warships as ship design and armament developed throughout the 18th century.
