Sarah Lewis (professor)
Sarah Lewis is an American art historian, curator, and author. She is currently the John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the History of Art and Architecture and African and African American Studies at Harvard University. Her research focuses on the intersection of visual culture, racial justice, and American democracy.
Lewis's academic work explores how images shape our understanding of race, identity, and social justice. Her scholarship spans various media, including photography, painting, and digital art. She is known for her interdisciplinary approach, connecting art history with fields such as political science, sociology, and cultural studies.
Lewis is the author of The Rise: Creativity, the Gift of Failure, and the Search for Mastery, which explores the role of failure in the creative process and the pursuit of excellence. She has also written extensively on topics such as visual representation, Black aesthetics, and the relationship between art and social change.
In addition to her academic work, Lewis has curated exhibitions at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. She serves on the boards of several arts and cultural organizations. She received her B.A. from Harvard University, an M.Phil. from Oxford University, and a Ph.D. from Yale University.
