Siurana (Tarragona)
Siurana is a village located in the municipality of Cornudella de Montsant, in the comarca of Priorat, province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain.
Geography: Siurana sits atop a limestone cliff overlooking the Siurana reservoir. Its strategic location offered natural defenses and contributed to its historical significance. The village is situated within the Serra de Montsant Natural Park, an area known for its rugged terrain and scenic beauty.
History: Siurana was the last Moorish stronghold in Catalonia to fall to the Christian reconquest. It resisted numerous attacks before finally surrendering in 1153 to the forces of Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona. Legend says that the Moorish queen Abdelazia threw herself and her horse off the cliff rather than surrender to the Christians. The ruins of the Moorish castle still stand as a testament to this period.
