French submarine Phoque (1926)

The Phoque was a Saphir-class submarine of the French Navy launched in 1926. She was part of a class of six submarines designed for coastal patrol and mine-laying. The Saphir-class submarines were double-hulled vessels with a displacement of approximately 760 tons surfaced and 935 tons submerged. They had a length of around 66 meters, a beam of 7.1 meters, and a draft of 4.3 meters.

The Phoque was armed with six 550mm torpedo tubes (four forward and two aft) and a 75mm deck gun. They could carry up to 32 mines externally. Her propulsion system consisted of two diesel engines for surface running and two electric motors for underwater propulsion, giving her a surface speed of around 14 knots and a submerged speed of approximately 9 knots.

Phoque saw service during World War II. Following the Fall of France in 1940, she was initially under the control of the Vichy French government. She was later scuttled in Toulon in November 1942 to prevent her capture by German forces. She was later salvaged by the Italians and briefly renamed FR.111 before being scuttled again in 1944.
