Gary Foster (musician)
Gary Foster (born March 25, 1936, Leavenworth, Kansas, died May 3, 2023, Sierra Madre, California) was an American jazz alto saxophonist, flautist, and clarinetist.
Foster was a prominent figure in the West Coast jazz scene, known for his lyrical and technically proficient playing style. He began his professional career in the 1950s, and went on to perform and record with a wide range of notable musicians, including Clare Fischer, Warne Marsh, Horace Tapscott, Shelly Manne, and Stan Kenton.
Foster was a highly respected session musician, contributing to numerous film and television soundtracks. He also released several albums under his own name, showcasing his improvisational skills and compositional talents. His recordings often featured a blend of bebop, cool jazz, and West Coast jazz influences.
He taught jazz improvisation and woodwinds at various institutions, including the California Institute of the Arts. His pedagogical approach emphasized a strong foundation in music theory, ear training, and instrumental technique.
Foster's contributions to jazz education and his significant body of recorded work solidified his reputation as a highly influential and respected figure in the jazz world. He continued to perform and teach until shortly before his death.
