George Leake (merchant)

George Leake (1787-1849) was an early settler and prominent merchant in the Swan River Colony, later Western Australia. He arrived in 1829 aboard the Parmelia, accompanying the colony's first Lieutenant-Governor, James Stirling.

Leake quickly established himself as a leading figure in the fledgling colony's commercial activities. He engaged in diverse ventures including importing goods, exporting sandalwood and wool, and supplying provisions to the growing population. His mercantile activities played a significant role in the colony's early economic development.

Beyond his business pursuits, Leake was involved in public life. He served as a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1832 to 1834, contributing to the early governance of the colony. He was known for his advocacy for the interests of the mercantile community and his commitment to the colony's prosperity.

Leake's influence extended to the social fabric of the Swan River Colony. He was a respected member of the community and contributed to its development through his business activities and public service. He left a lasting mark on the early history of Western Australia.
