Houchin
Houchin refers to a type of mobile electric power unit, often used to provide electrical power to aircraft while they are on the ground. These units are typically diesel-powered generators mounted on a trailer or self-propelled chassis.
Houchins are critical for aircraft maintenance, pre-flight checks, and passenger comfort while the aircraft's main engines or auxiliary power unit (APU) are not running. They supply the necessary voltage and current for lighting, avionics, environmental control systems (heating and cooling), and other onboard electrical systems.
The term "Houchin" is derived from the name of a British manufacturer, Houchin Aerospace, that was a prominent supplier of these units. While other manufacturers exist, the name "Houchin" has become a genericized trademark, similar to how "Hoover" is often used to refer to any vacuum cleaner, regardless of the actual brand.
Houchin units vary in size and power output depending on the type of aircraft they are intended to support. Larger commercial airliners require more powerful Houchins than smaller regional jets or general aviation aircraft. Factors affecting the required power output include the aircraft's voltage requirements (e.g., 115 VAC, 400 Hz), the total electrical load of the onboard systems, and the ambient temperature conditions.
