Salname
A salname (Persian: سالنامه, from sal meaning "year" and name meaning "book" or "record") is a type of annual publication prevalent in Persia (Iran), Central Asia, and other regions influenced by Persian culture. Historically, salnames served as almanacs or yearbooks, providing a variety of information, including calendars, astronomical data (such as astrological forecasts, sunrise and sunset times), historical events, official lists (government officials, prominent citizens), cultural information (festivals, notable figures), and agricultural guides.
Salnames often contained literary contributions, such as poetry, short stories, and essays, reflecting the intellectual and artistic trends of the time. They were used by merchants, administrators, scholars, and the general public for planning, record-keeping, and gaining insights into the past, present, and future. The content and scope of salnames varied depending on the period and the intended audience, ranging from simple calendars to comprehensive encyclopedic compendiums. Modern publications referred to as salnames may maintain a focus on calendrical information or serve as yearbooks documenting events and achievements of a particular organization or institution.
