HMS Penelope (1829)

HMS Penelope was a 46-gun fifth-rate frigate of the British Royal Navy, launched in 1829. She was built at Pembroke Dockyard according to the lines of the Leda-class, although with some modifications.

Penelope's early service saw her deployed on various peacetime duties, typical for frigates of the period, including patrol, transportation, and presence duties in different parts of the world. In the late 1830s, she served off the coast of Spain during the First Carlist War, providing support to the British Auxiliary Legion and upholding British interests in the region.

She underwent significant modifications in the 1840s, becoming one of the first warships to be fitted with steam power. She had her hull cut in half and lengthened to accommodate engines, effectively converting her from a sailing frigate into a paddle steamer. This conversion was completed in 1843. Post-conversion, she was re-rated as a steam frigate.

As a steam frigate, Penelope was actively involved in anti-slavery patrols off the coast of Africa, intercepting and capturing slave ships. She served in this role for a number of years, contributing to the suppression of the transatlantic slave trade. The added speed and maneuverability afforded by her steam engine proved invaluable in this mission.

Penelope was eventually sold out of service in 1864. Her career marked a transitional period in naval technology, reflecting the shift from sail to steam power. Her service highlights the diverse roles undertaken by Royal Navy vessels during the 19th century, from diplomatic missions to active combat against piracy and the slave trade.
