Iran Barkley
Iran "The Blade" Barkley (born May 6, 1960) is an American former professional boxer. Known for his toughness, durability, and aggressive fighting style, Barkley competed from 1982 to 1999 and held world titles in three weight divisions: middleweight, super middleweight, and light heavyweight.
Barkley's career was defined by a series of memorable fights against some of the biggest names in boxing. He is perhaps best known for his two fights against Thomas Hearns. In their first encounter in 1988, Barkley upset Hearns to win the WBC middleweight title in a fight widely considered one of the best of the year. Hearns later avenged the loss in a rematch.
Other notable opponents included Roberto Durán, whom Barkley defeated in 1989 to win the WBC super middleweight title, and Michael Nunn, against whom he lost his IBF middleweight title. He also fought James Toney, Nigel Benn, and Darrin Van Horn.
Barkley's fighting style was characterized by relentless pressure, a strong chin, and a willingness to engage in toe-to-toe exchanges. While not known for exceptional technical skill, his grit and determination made him a formidable opponent. He retired with a record of 43 wins, 19 losses, and 1 no contest, with 27 wins by knockout. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2024.
