Order of Merit (Egypt)
The Order of Merit (Arabic: وسام الاستحقاق) is a state order of the Arab Republic of Egypt. It is awarded for outstanding achievements in the fields of science, arts, literature, and other areas that contribute significantly to the advancement of Egyptian society or humanity in general.
The Order ranks below the Order of the Nile but above other Egyptian orders. It is conferred upon both Egyptian and foreign nationals. The President of Egypt serves as the Grand Master of the Order.
The Order of Merit is typically awarded in five classes:
- Grand Cordon (وشاح)
- Grand Officer (ضابط أكبر)
- Commander (قائد)
- Officer (ضابط)
- Knight (فارس)
The insignia of the Order varies depending on the class and period of its issuance. It commonly includes a star or cross with symbols representing Egyptian culture and progress. The ribbon is typically a solid color or striped with colors associated with Egypt.
Specific criteria and nomination processes for the Order are determined by the Egyptian government. Recipients of the Order are typically recognized at formal ceremonies and are entitled to certain privileges and honors within Egypt.
