Sérgio Vieira (politician)
Sérgio Vieira was a Mozambican politician and economist. He played a prominent role in the Mozambican War of Independence and the subsequent government of Mozambique under President Samora Machel.
Vieira was a key figure in the Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (FRELIMO), the liberation movement that fought for Mozambique's independence from Portugal. After independence in 1975, he held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Security, and Minister of Justice.
He was a strong advocate for socialist policies and played a significant role in shaping Mozambique's economic and political landscape in the early years of its independence. His contributions included land reform initiatives aimed at redistributing land to peasants and promoting collective agriculture.
Vieira was a controversial figure, particularly due to his role as Minister of Security, a position that oversaw the state security apparatus during a period marked by political repression and human rights abuses.
He died in 1993. His legacy remains complex and debated in Mozambique, with some acknowledging his contributions to the struggle for independence and early development, while others criticize his involvement in human rights violations.
