popHealth

popHealth (population Health) is a free, open-source software application designed to assist healthcare providers and organizations in measuring and reporting electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs). It is specifically built to calculate these measures using data extracted from electronic health records (EHRs). Its primary function is to bridge the gap between clinical data captured in EHRs and the reporting requirements for various quality reporting programs.

popHealth uses standardized quality measure logic defined using Health Quality Measure Format (HQMF), a standard developed by Health Level Seven International (HL7). This allows for consistent interpretation and application of quality measures across different systems and organizations.

The application is typically used by:

  • Healthcare Providers: To track and improve the quality of care they provide to their patient populations.
  • Hospitals and Health Systems: To monitor performance against quality benchmarks and identify areas for improvement.
  • Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs): To meet reporting requirements and demonstrate value-based care.
  • Researchers: To analyze population health data and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.

popHealth enables users to import and process patient data, execute the HQMF-based quality measure logic, and generate reports showing performance on the selected measures. These reports can then be used for internal quality improvement initiatives or external reporting to payers, regulatory agencies, or other stakeholders. The reports generated also help identify areas within the EHR workflows where data capture improvements can positively impact measure performance.
