Jimmy Young (boxer)

Jimmy Young (1948-2005) was an American heavyweight boxer best known for his elusive style and his controversial decision loss to Muhammad Ali in 1976. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Young turned professional in 1969 and quickly established himself as a skilled defensive fighter. He relied on his footwork, lateral movement, and a strong jab to frustrate opponents. While not known for his punching power, Young's ability to avoid punishment and control the tempo of a fight made him a difficult opponent.

His most notable fight was against Muhammad Ali on April 30, 1976. Many observers, including some ringside, believed Young had won the fight, but the judges awarded a unanimous decision to Ali. The decision remains controversial and is often cited as an example of a hometown decision.

Other significant fights in Young's career included a win over George Foreman in 1977, a bout where he thoroughly outboxed the aging Foreman, effectively ending Foreman's first comeback attempt. He also fought Larry Holmes for the WBC Heavyweight Championship in 1978, losing by technical knockout in the 12th round.

Despite never winning a major heavyweight title, Jimmy Young was a respected and influential figure in boxing. His defensive skills and his ability to compete at a high level against some of the greatest heavyweights of all time cemented his place in boxing history. He retired from boxing in 1988. After retiring, he struggled with health problems and financial difficulties. He died in 2005 at the age of 56.
