Žabljak
Žabljak is a small town in northern Montenegro. It is the center of the Žabljak Municipality and is considered the highest town in the Balkans, situated at an altitude of 1,456 meters (4,777 feet).
Geography and Climate: Žabljak is located in the Durmitor mountain region, known for its dramatic landscapes of glacial lakes, canyons, and forests. The climate is subarctic, with cold winters and mild summers. Snowfall is significant, making it a popular ski resort during the winter months.
Tourism: The town's economy is largely driven by tourism. Crno jezero (Black Lake), located near Žabljak, is one of the most iconic glacial lakes in Montenegro.
History: The area around Žabljak has been inhabited since ancient times. The modern town began to develop in the late 19th century. It officially became a town in 1870, after Montenegro was liberated from Ottoman rule.
