Ray Collins (baseball)

Ray Collins (born William Raymond Collins, November 26, 1887 – July 16, 1959) was an American left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. He played primarily for the Boston Red Sox during the dead-ball era, from 1909 to 1917, also spending a partial season with the Cincinnati Reds in 1917.

Collins was a key member of the Red Sox pitching staff that won World Series titles in 1912, 1915, and 1916. He was known for his excellent control and ability to throw a variety of pitches. In 1910, he won 20 games and followed that up with a stellar 1912 season, in which he went 26-9 with a 2.20 ERA. He also pitched a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Athletics on September 23, 1917, while with the Reds, one of the last no-hitters of the dead-ball era.

Following his major league career, Collins managed and played in the minor leagues. He also worked as a scout for the Red Sox after his playing days. Ray Collins was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2008.
