Britoil
Britoil was a British independent oil company that operated primarily in the North Sea. It was formed in 1982 following the privatisation of the British National Oil Corporation's (BNOC) exploration and production assets.
The company was headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland, and focused on exploration, development, and production of oil and gas. Britoil became a significant player in the UK's oil industry during the 1980s, holding substantial interests in several North Sea oil fields.
In 1988, Britoil was acquired by BP (formerly British Petroleum) in a contested takeover bid. This acquisition significantly increased BP's North Sea reserves and production capacity. Following the takeover, the Britoil name ceased to exist as the company was fully integrated into BP's operations. The acquisition was controversial at the time, raising concerns about the level of foreign ownership in the UK's oil sector.
