Originally a small fishing village and part of the commune of Escoublac, Pornichet developed independently during the 19th century, fueled by the growth of seaside tourism. The economy of Pornichet is heavily reliant on tourism, particularly during the summer months. The town offers a variety of tourist activities including sailing, swimming, and golf. The Port de Plaisance de Pornichet, a large marina, is a significant contributor to the local economy. Fishing also remains a presence, though smaller than in the past.
