Max Angus
Max Angus (1914-2017) was an Australian artist, primarily known for his watercolour landscapes of Tasmania. He was a significant figure in the Tasmanian art scene for over six decades.
Angus was born in Scottsdale, Tasmania. He studied art at the Hobart Technical College under Mildred Lovett. His early works were influenced by the traditional British watercolour style, but he later developed his own distinctive approach, characterized by a delicate yet evocative rendering of the Tasmanian landscape.
He held numerous solo exhibitions throughout his career and his work is represented in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and several regional galleries.
Angus was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 1986 for his services to art. He continued to paint into his 90s and remained an active participant in the Tasmanian art community until his death.
