MV Arctic

The MV Arctic was a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker and supply vessel. Originally built as a commercial cargo vessel in 1969 and named the Canmar Carrier IV, it was acquired by the Canadian government and converted for Arctic operations in 1994. The Arctic's primary role was to resupply Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Alert, the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world, as well as other research stations and communities in the Canadian Arctic.

The vessel was ice-strengthened to operate in the challenging conditions of the Arctic Ocean. It was also equipped with a helicopter landing deck for aerial support and reconnaissance. The Arctic played a crucial role in maintaining Canadian sovereignty and presence in the Arctic region by providing logistical support, conducting scientific research, and assisting with search and rescue operations.

The Arctic was decommissioned from the Canadian Coast Guard fleet in 2021 after serving for over 25 years. It was replaced by newer and more capable icebreakers.
