OpenNet (organization)
OpenNet was a non-governmental organization (NGO) that focused on monitoring and reporting on internet censorship and surveillance practices, primarily in Southeast Asia. Founded in 2002 and based in Thailand, OpenNet worked to promote freedom of expression and access to information online.
OpenNet’s activities included documenting instances of website blocking, content filtering, and online surveillance in countries like Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, and others in the region. The organization produced reports, analyses, and advocacy materials to raise awareness of these issues among policymakers, internet users, and international organizations.
A key aspect of OpenNet's work was its research methodology, which often involved technical testing of internet infrastructure to identify specific censorship techniques employed by governments. This information was used to inform advocacy efforts aimed at promoting policy changes and protecting online freedoms.
OpenNet collaborated with other human rights organizations, internet freedom advocates, and journalists to share information and coordinate campaigns. While OpenNet itself is no longer active (having reportedly ceased operations in the mid-2010s), its research and advocacy efforts contributed to a greater understanding of internet censorship and surveillance in Southeast Asia, and its findings continue to be referenced by researchers and advocates working on these issues. Its work highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in government internet policies.
