Kigoriak

A kigoriak is an Inuit term, specifically from the Inupiaq language of northern and northwestern Alaska, for a layer of skin clothing, usually a parka or similar garment, worn during cold weather conditions. The term refers to the innermost layer of such clothing worn next to the skin. The purpose of the kigoriak is to absorb perspiration and maintain warmth even when damp. Traditional kigoriaks were often made from animal skins, such as caribou or wolverine, with the fur facing inwards towards the body. The absorbent nature of the fur helps to wick away moisture and trap body heat. The kigoriak is an essential component of traditional cold-weather clothing systems, helping to prevent hypothermia and maintain comfort in harsh Arctic environments. The use of natural materials and the layered approach to clothing are crucial adaptations to surviving in extremely cold climates.
