Telex (input method)

Telex is a Vietnamese input method used primarily on computers and mobile devices. It allows users to type Vietnamese characters, which often include diacritical marks (tone marks and vowel modifications), using a standard QWERTY keyboard. It's one of the most popular and widely used input methods for Vietnamese.

The Telex method relies on associating specific keystrokes with the addition of diacritics. For instance, adding an "s" after a vowel typically adds a sắc (acute accent), "f" adds a huyền (grave accent), "r" adds a hỏi (hook above), "x" adds a ngã (tilde), and "j" adds a nặng (dot below). Similarly, double-typing a vowel (e.g., "aa") may change the vowel to â.

The simplicity and ease of learning have contributed significantly to Telex's widespread adoption. It doesn't require users to memorize complex key combinations or use on-screen keyboards. The keystrokes are relatively intuitive, allowing for faster and more efficient typing of Vietnamese text.

Several software implementations and operating systems include built-in support for Telex input. Third-party input method editors (IMEs) are also available that offer Telex, often with customizable settings and enhanced features.
