Behrens (horse)

Behrens was an American Thoroughbred racehorse foaled in 1895. Bred and owned by August Belmont Jr., he was known for his exceptional speed and talent, though his career was somewhat hampered by various ailments and inconsistencies.

Behrens's sire was Bending, a prominent British stallion imported to the United States, and his dam was Bella Donna, a daughter of the influential stallion Domino. He was trained by Hall of Famer Matthew Byrnes.

During his racing career, Behrens competed in several prestigious races, including the Suburban Handicap, which he won in 1898, and the Brooklyn Handicap, where he set a new track record. He also ran against and defeated some of the top horses of his era, establishing himself as a leading contender. Despite his successes, he was frequently plagued by leg issues and temperament, which prevented him from reaching his full potential.

Following his racing career, Behrens was retired to stud, where he had a modest impact on Thoroughbred breeding. He is remembered as a talented but ultimately unfulfilled champion from the late 19th century.
