3rd Panzer Brigade (Bundeswehr)
The 3rd Panzer Brigade (German: Panzerbrigade 3) "Weser-Leine" is a mechanized brigade of the German Army, assigned to the 1st Panzer Division. It is stationed primarily in Lower Saxony, Germany. The brigade's headquarters is located in Augustdorf.
History
The brigade was formed on March 1, 1956, as Kampfgruppe C 1 (Combat Group C 1) in Munsterlager. In 1957, it was redesignated Panzerbrigade 3. Throughout the Cold War, it formed a key component of the Bundeswehr's defense forces in the North German Plain, responsible for deterring and, if necessary, repelling potential Warsaw Pact aggression. The brigade participated in numerous NATO exercises and training programs during this period.
Following the end of the Cold War and German reunification, the brigade underwent significant restructuring and downsizing. It adapted to the changing security environment, focusing on multinational operations and crisis response. Elements of the brigade have deployed to various international missions, including peacekeeping operations in the Balkans.
