He Zuoxiu
He Zuoxiu (何祚庥) (born 1927) is a Chinese physicist known for his Marxist and dialectical materialist views on science and his strong criticism of pseudoscience and supernatural phenomena.
He Zuoxiu graduated from Tsinghua University in 1951. He worked at the Institute of Atomic Energy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and later at the Institute of Theoretical Physics. He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
He Zuoxiu gained prominence in the 1990s for his vocal campaigns against perceived pseudoscience, particularly Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the Falun Gong spiritual practice. He often employed a Marxist perspective to analyze and critique these phenomena, arguing that they were irrational, unscientific, and detrimental to the progress of socialist society.
His views and activities have been both praised and criticized. Supporters credit him with promoting scientific thinking and rationalism, while critics accuse him of being dogmatic and unfairly attacking legitimate scientific inquiry. His critiques of TCM, in particular, have been controversial given the deep cultural significance of the practice in China.
He Zuoxiu's publications include works on particle physics and the philosophical implications of science. His opinions on a wide range of scientific and social issues continue to generate debate in China.
