Sand Island (Hawaii)

Sand Island is a mostly artificial island located in Honolulu Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii. It sits at the entrance to the harbor, directly south of downtown Honolulu and west of the Honolulu International Airport.

Historically, Sand Island was a naturally occurring sandbar. Beginning in the 1930s, the U.S. government significantly expanded the island using dredged material from the harbor to create a larger landmass. This expansion continued through much of the 20th century.

For many years, Sand Island was used primarily for military purposes. During World War II, it housed a U.S. Army internment camp for Japanese Americans, German Americans, and Italian Americans deemed potential security risks.

Following the war, portions of the island were gradually transitioned to civilian use. Today, Sand Island encompasses a mix of industrial, recreational, and residential areas. Key features include:

  • Sand Island State Recreation Area: A popular park offering camping, fishing, surfing, and views of the Honolulu skyline.
  • Wastewater Treatment Plant: The City and County of Honolulu operates a large wastewater treatment plant on Sand Island.
  • Industrial Activities: Various industrial businesses and facilities are located on the island, including shipping and storage operations.
  • Homeless Encampments: Over the years, Sand Island has been known for hosting encampments of homeless individuals, raising social and environmental concerns.

Sand Island plays a vital role in Honolulu's infrastructure and economy. Its strategic location at the entrance to the harbor makes it crucial for maritime activities, while the recreation area provides valuable open space for residents and visitors. However, issues related to homelessness and environmental management continue to be significant challenges for the island.
