Thunder (2022 film)
Thunder is a 2022 Swiss drama film directed by Carmen Jaquier. The film, originally titled Foudre in French, explores themes of female sexuality, religious hypocrisy, and societal constraints within a devout Protestant community in the Swiss Alps during the summer of 1900.
The plot centers on Elisabeth, a young woman who is sent home from finishing school after being deemed "too wild." Upon her return to her family's remote village, she discovers that her older sister, Innocente, has mysteriously died. Officially, Innocente's death is attributed to illness. However, Elisabeth suspects something more sinister and embarks on a personal investigation, confronting the secrets and lies that permeate the tight-knit community. As Elisabeth delves deeper, she grapples with her own desires and the restrictive expectations placed upon women, ultimately challenging the patriarchal norms and religious dogma that govern her world.
The film garnered critical acclaim for its evocative cinematography, strong performances, and nuanced exploration of complex social issues. It was selected to compete in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and received positive reviews for its portrayal of a young woman's rebellion against the constraints of her time.
