Saschiz
Saschiz is a commune in Mureș County, Transylvania, Romania. It is composed of three villages: Cloașterf (Klosdorf; Miklósfalva), Mihai Viteazu (originally Sântmihai; Szentmihály) and Saschiz.
Saschiz is known for its fortified church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the seven Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania. The church, built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries by the Saxon community, dominates the landscape and reflects the historical and cultural significance of the Saxon presence in the region. Its imposing architecture, including its defensive walls and towers, provided refuge for the villagers during times of conflict.
The village of Saschiz also features traditional Saxon houses, maintaining a distinct architectural style that showcases the area's cultural heritage. The economy of the commune is largely based on agriculture and tourism, with the fortified church being a major draw for visitors.
