Npower (United Kingdom)
Npower was a British energy company supplying gas and electricity to homes and businesses in the United Kingdom. Formed in 2000 through the merger of Yorkshire Electricity and Northern Electric, it was a subsidiary of the German energy giant RWE Group until 2019. In March 2019, Npower was acquired by E.ON UK.
Throughout its history, Npower was one of the "Big Six" energy suppliers in the UK, along with British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON UK, ScottishPower, and SSE. The company provided a range of services, including energy supply, energy efficiency advice, and smart home solutions.
Npower faced numerous challenges during its operation, including regulatory scrutiny, customer service issues, and financial losses. Its customer service record was often criticized, leading to investigations and fines from Ofgem, the UK's energy regulator.
Following its acquisition by E.ON UK, Npower ceased to exist as a separate entity. Its residential customer base was transferred to E.ON Next, while its business energy customers were handled separately by E.ON. Significant job losses occurred as part of the integration process. The Npower brand is no longer actively used in the UK energy market.
