Chantico

Chantico was the Aztec goddess of the hearth, volcanoes, precious things, and personal possessions. Her name translates roughly to "she who dwells in the house." Chantico was associated with fire and the home, especially the family hearth, which was central to domestic life. She was often depicted with a red serpent on her head and her face painted red and yellow.

Chantico was considered a protector of households and a guardian against dangers such as thieves and fires. Offerings were made to her to ensure domestic harmony, security, and prosperity. In some accounts, she was said to have been turned into a dog by Tonacatecuhtli, the creator god, after breaking a fast by eating paprika-seasoned fish. This story highlights the importance of ritual observance and the consequences of transgressing religious laws. Chantico's story served as a cautionary tale within Aztec society.

Her calendrical significance is linked to the day sign Ce Atl (One Water).
