Qala Wust

Qala Wust (also spelled Qala-i-Wust) is a historical fortress located in the Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan, in the Badakhshan Province. The fortress sits at a strategic point overlooking the Panj River, which forms the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan in this region. Its precise historical origins are debated, but archaeological evidence suggests it was likely established or significantly fortified during the Kushan period (1st to 3rd centuries CE) and saw continued use and modification through various subsequent periods.

Qala Wust played a role in controlling trade and movement through the Wakhan Corridor, a narrow strip of land connecting Afghanistan to China. The Wakhan Corridor has historically served as a vital trade route, part of the larger Silk Road network, and Qala Wust was instrumental in monitoring and protecting this passage. Control of the fortress meant control over a significant portion of this east-west traffic.

The structure of Qala Wust is that of a typical Central Asian fortress, constructed primarily of mud brick and stone.
