North Monmouthshire (UK Parliament constituency)
North Monmouthshire was a county constituency in Monmouthshire, Wales, which returned a Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It was created by the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, replacing the earlier two-member Monmouthshire constituency.
History:
The constituency was formed in 1885, encompassing the northern part of the historic county of Monmouthshire. Due to population changes and boundary revisions, North Monmouthshire was abolished for the 1918 general election. Its territory was largely incorporated into the new Abertillery constituency.
Boundaries:
The constituency generally covered the northern, more rural and industrial parts of Monmouthshire. This included areas notable for coal mining and iron production.
Members of Parliament:
- 1885-1895: Thomas Phillips Price (Liberal)
- 1895-1900: Reginald McKenna (Liberal)
- 1900-1918: Reginald McKenna (Liberal)
Election Results:
Election results for North Monmouthshire consistently showed strong support for the Liberal Party throughout its existence. Reginald McKenna held the seat comfortably through several elections before its abolishment. Details of specific election results (e.g., vote counts, opposing candidates) are available in historical records and parliamentary archives.
